Through remarkably close encounters with patients and medical staff, the film reveals the everyday realities of people experiencing severe psychological distress. Individuals of different ages and backgrounds share their personal struggles, fears and hopes for recovery. Their stories expose the vulnerability and complexity of mental illness while emphasizing the humanity behind psychiatric diagnoses. One particularly moving story follows a woman from Bangladesh whose asylum application has been rejected. Separated from her young son and facing deportation, she struggles with profound despair and suicidal thoughts. Her situation confronts the hospital staff with a painful dilemma: how can psychiatric treatment help someone whose suffering is inseparable from circumstances beyond the hospital's control?
