Colvin College is still reeling from the fire that destroyed the administration building last semester, and put a student, Margot Miller, in a coma, when Professor Moynihan announces he will be offering his famous “History of Lying” seminar to a select number of students. Cat Carlson is thrilled to be accepted into the course: Moynihan is a celebrity on campus and is releasing his very own lie-detecting technology, CUFF, later in the year. But the class—“The Liars' Club”— discovers Professor Moynihan has his own agenda.

The game is afoot! Cat begins her investigtion with her best friend and podcast co-host, Allie. They look over Allie’s super-helpful, super-pink suspect board, which ranks the other Liars Club members' alibis by how suspicious they are. They realize that Naia's alibi is really weak. Not only that, but Allie points out that they don’t know why the professor is so sure the fire was arson. Steeling herself, Cat decides to confront both Naia and Professor Moynihan about their secrets.

Moynihan puts everyone’s truth-telling abilities to the test, literally, with a pop quiz experiment that reveals the biggest fibbers in the class. Uncertain how to navigate the treacherous course, members of the class begin forming tentative alliances. But can anyone be trusted in the Liars’ Club?

The students show up to class only to discover that they have been invited to a cocktail party at the Professor’s house. Their invitations contain secrets— ones that they are not allowed to share with anyone else. Of course, the Party Twins and Alvaro alliance immediately breaks the rules. Once at the house, the Liars Club discovers that their task is to return that secret to its rightful owner, forever binding them together. When Bella and Benedict’s cheating is revealed, however, more secrets spill forth.

While Moynihan expresses his confidence in Cuff to a local journalist, Cat’s is badly shaken. She discovers Allie and Harper confiding in each other about the Liars’ Club case and feels betrayed by her only friend. Left vulnerable and even more alone, Cat becomes the prime suspect when a video of her actions the night of fire is emailed to every student on campus.

The Liars' Club gets a chance to use Cuff on each other, testing the truth of their alibis. Things go askew, however, when the device proves Erika’s honesty: she was outside the administration building at the time of the fire, and she saw someone who looked like Wilson running away. Adding to the upheaval is Margot Miller’s recovery from her coma. Suddenly, there’s someone else who might have information about everything leading up to the fire. The Liars' Club may have narrowed down their suspect list, but the mystery is far from being resolved.

Margot Miller is awake—but isn’t taking visitors. That doesn’t stop Harper, though. When she finds out that she’s not the only Liars' Club member who snuck into the hospital, she goes to talk to Cat to share what she knows. But when The Colvin Cauldron publishes a shocking story about Allie, Cat realizes she may not have all the facts.

Wilson meets Cat in the studio where she emerges and ties Wilson up in an effort to force him to confess to the fire. Cat and Allie begin to interrogate Wilson. Through their interrogation, the three realize that...

~~~My suns, my moons, and all my stars~~~ Because of my eccentric and peculiar past, I know many of you will not believe my truth as to what I was doing the night of the fire, but here it is: Erika "Phoenix" Anders' alibi.
Hello. This is a video detailing my activities on the night of the fire at Colvin College. If you have questions about any of the specifics of my alibi, I'll do my best to clarify them in the comments section below. Thank you.
This is just my alibi video about what I was doing the night of the fire for “History of Lying.” Spoiler alert: it’s SUPER scandalous.
Hello partners in crime! Shout out to my sorority sisters, who promised they’d watch my alibi (I’ll be checking the number of viewers, Amanda, Phoebe.) I’m SO excited to be a part of Professor Moynihan’s class! Being suspected of arson is just a party favor. ;)
Hey folks, not sure why I'm doing this other than the fact it's an assignment...but, anyway, my alibi is pretty simple. Shouldn't surprise you, I was working out. This good enough for you, Moynihan?
My fellow activists, unite! I have been unfairly accused of setting a fire on my college campus. The powers that be try to silence our voices by vilifying us, but the truth will set us free! I know I can clear my name, and we can right this injustice. In the meantime, here's my alibi. ✊????
Hola beautiful people! ????❤️ Guess WHAT? We’re in the Liars' Club, babyyy! We put the party in GUILTY PARTIES, you know what we’re saying! But you saw our stories that night, right? We were just hanging out together! Check our alibi. We’re not "twinspicious."
I’m running behind on my homework, but I bet you guys won’t mind if I multitask a bit ???? Maybe my shirtless good looks will distract you from my painfully bad attempt at telling two lies and one truth.
Hello. Despite my moral reservations, I will be attempting to tell two lies, as well as one truth. To mitigate the damage of these lies, I will attempt to make them true after the fact. Thank you.
~~~My soulshine travelers~~~ I bring you three gifts: two are poison. To call any of these stories “lies” leaves a taste of ash in my mouth, but know that among them is one gleaming, perfect “truth.” Can you tell which one?

Welcome back to your number one, 24/7 game show: Spot the Deception! Can you tell which of my stories is false? Two of them are lies, and one is true! I hope that you’re learning something from me about lying, my partners-in-crime— or else you might find you’re a VERY easy mark. ❤️

To everyone asking, the care package drive went really well! Thank you for your kind words and your compassion! This week, Professor Moynihan wants to see if you can tell when I’m lying. Two of my statements will be true; one will be a lie. Whether this course is going to help anyone remains to be seen. Solidarity!

This week, you get to do a little detective work of your own! I’ll say three things, two of which will be lies. Try to spot the truth. Good luck! And, yeah, I’m still getting used to the whole “titling your video” thing.

Hola beautiful people! ???????? This week, we’re playing our second favorite party game: two truths and a lie! Oh wait, no— it’s two LIES and ONE truth! Maybe next time we can convince the Professor to let us play a game of virtual spin the bottle?

Welcome to the second installment in The History of Lying: Online. This week, we will begin by exploring the nature of lying and its birthplace in human instinct and physiology. After watching the lecture, you can follow the link below to the Google Classroom page, where you will begin your homework assignment.

The Liars' Club has paired off this week to see how much they can guess about one another's secrets. How well can they lie? How difficult is it to keep their secrets, secret? With this many eyes on them, who will be the first to slip up?

How do we know when we're being lied to? In this week's History of Lying lecture, we'll discuss liars' tells and divining truth from fiction. Everyone wants to believe that their friends, family, and loved ones are trustworthy—but we also want to know how to spot deceit. Lecture by Simon Morales.

In this week’s class, the Liars' Club learned the power of secret keeping—and the consequences of revealing secrets. For their homework, they were asked to reflect on their secrets, and how keeping the truth hidden can foster lies. Can they manage to stay truthful in their videos?

For this week’s lecture, we will be exploring types of lies and liars. There are many ways to deceive, after all— some subtler than others. Just as biologists categorize different kinds of venomous plants and animals, this lecture should help you recognize lies as they appear in the wild. Lecture by Simon Morales Again, we no longer have spaces free in our Google Classroom, but I invite you to watch the lectures and audit the class. You may not receive a grade, but what you learn will be invaluable.

The Liars' Club has been asked to reflect on their semester thus far and what they have been most surprised to learn. Most of their homework this week involved self-reflection: why did they find themselves lying?

Most of us agree that we lie to protect our secrets. Our deceptions are a shield against prying eyes and curious minds. But how do our intentions shape the kinds of lies that we tell?

Following their lesson in which they tested Cuff on each other, The Liars' Club’s task is to continue working in pairs with the device, in order to suss out the truth. What will they discover about each other’s versions of the truth?

With CUFF about to launch, and false news shaping the future of the world, it’s important to consider how technology shapes our take on truth. While it’s ironic that we’ll be studying this phenomenon in our Internet-based classroom, hopefully it will help you consider how technology has shaped your ability to be truthful. Again, we no longer have spaces free in our Google Classroom, but I invite you to watch the lectures and audit the class. You may not receive a grade, but what you learn will be invaluable.

In the last week of class, the Liars' Club has been asked to identify who they suspect set the fire in the administration building. Whether their accusations are correct determines who gets the A— the only A in the class.

As the lectures draw to a close, it is important to remember why we explored lying and the impact of the truth on society. Without truth, our society is in shambles— but without lies, would we be human? Thank you for your participation this quarter. It has been an honor to work with you. Again, we no longer have spaces free in our Google Classroom, but I invite you to watch the lectures and audit the class. You may not receive a grade, but what you learn will be invaluable.
