July 1941. A shell hits Serafima's house. Serafima buries the dead and finds the wounded Captain Khlebnikov. She hides him in a dugout. Later, a German deserter named Holtz joins them.

Serafima visits the family of Nokhim, a local photographer, in the ghetto. The dugout's residents attempt to free the ghetto prisoners, but the Jews refuse to follow them.

A thief, Serafima's former fiancé, appears. He feeds Serafima, but works for the Germans. They are executed in the ghetto. Serafima saves Nokhim's little daughter.
