It's Cinemassacre's Monster Madness XX: Trick or Treat! (That's XX for 20 years.) This year I'm covering movies that take place on Halloween, and I'm kicking things off with one of the most brutal series in modern horror. Terrifier (2016) follows Art the Clown as he stalks his victims through Miles County on Halloween night, butchering anyone who gets in his way. Terrifier 2 (2022) picks up a year later, with Art resurrected by a sinister entity and hunting teenager Sienna and her younger brother on Halloween. Director Damien Leone made these on tiny budgets, and Terrifier 2 became infamous for reports of people fainting and throwing up in theaters. Here's what I thought.

Night of the Demons (1988) is a cult 80s favorite from director Kevin Tenney. A group of teenagers throw a Halloween party at Hull House, an abandoned funeral home, and hold a séance that wakes up a demon. One by one, the partygoers get possessed. It's loaded with practical effects, scream queen Linnea Quigley, and Halloween atmosphere. Let's take a look.

Haunt Season (2024) is a recent slasher from director Jake Jarvi. A masked killer starts murdering the cast of a Halloween haunt attraction, turning their staged fake injuries into the real thing and building toward a Halloween night massacre. It's a low-budget indie that leans hard into the haunt-season vibe. Let's take a look.

Hubie Halloween (2020) is a change of pace, an Adam Sandler comedy set on Halloween in Salem, Massachusetts. Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, the town's Halloween-obsessed punching bag, who has to become the unlikely hero when people start disappearing on Halloween night. It comes packed with a huge cast of Sandler regulars. Let's talk about it.

Jack-O (1995) is a low-budget slasher from director Steve Latshaw about a pumpkin-headed demon unleashed on Halloween night in the town of Oakmoor Crossing. When teenagers knock over an old grave, the creature rises to finish a centuries-old curse against the Kelly family.
