As Geoffrey leaves for his new life up north, the new landlord, Mr. Manderson, asks Elizabeth if she could show a few prospective tenants around. She quickly takes a shine to a widower in his late 30s, and sets about putting everyone else off!

After rowing with his wife, upstairs neighbour Sam asks Elizabeth to pretend to be his better half at a work party. Playing the role of Jill proves easier said than done.

As David and Penny begin moving in over the stairway, Elizabeth and friend Rose hope to make some money and resolve their childcare woes in one blow by establishing their own crèche.

After being asked to illustrate his new book, Elizabeth sees her friendship with neighbour David growing. When he invites her to dinner she prepares to ward off his amorous advances but, when they are not forthcoming, she starts to worry.
