SCORIGAMI RETURNS. Scorigami is defined as a final score that happens for the first time in NFL history. Nine years after our first video on the subject, Jon and Alex have teamed up to tell a four-part story of the NFL’s past, present, and future through the lens of scorigami. In Part 1. we examine the NFL’s proud beginnings as … I don’t know, a few teams that were actual teams, and some more teams that were kind of teams, and some other teams that were just some guys from the local glee club or army base or whatever.

The AFL, founded in 1960, was special for many reasons. One was its willingness to do what the NFL wouldn’t and adopt the two-point conversion, which allowed pro teams to score in chunks of eight for the first time. This, of course, changed the mathematics of scorigami forever. So where did the AFL come from? Well, uh … how much do you know about 1930s Texas oil prospecting?

In the NFL’s modern era, teams often create scorigami – in other words, a final score that’s never happened before – by way of baffling decision-making or a special teams disaster. They’re accidental and unpredictable. We know this. And yet, they also feel as though they’re guided by an invisible, supernatural hand. In Part 3 of Scorigami, Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein draw from the expertise of special guest Mina Kimes to investigate this phenomenon.

In this special 88-minute series finale, having already surveyed every NFL score that has ever happened, we now turn our attention to those that have not happened. A couple of them – 41-40 and 40-40 – occurred in the weeks between finishing and releasing this video. Some, such as 36-23, feel like they’re overdue. Others, like 25-18, are tougher scratches to itch, but we might live to see them. Still others, mathematically speaking, would likely take hundreds or thousands of years to occur under present NFL rules. Many more are so astronomically unlikely that they’re unlikely to occur while Earth is still habitable. And that is only the beginning.
