During his daily inspection round through the factory, Pickle King Oos once again faces his fair share of challenges. Unfortunately, another machine has broken down. Princes Silvian and Camiel must master all facets of the work, which includes driving trucks. Both are currently preparing to obtain their heavy vehicle licenses. Meanwhile, Frans, the experienced senior member of the company, is fortunately recovering well from his colon cancer.

‘The Pickle King’ is celebrating his birthday in grand style, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. The move towards modernization isn’t limited to the executive team; the entire company is undergoing a transformation. While the familiar atmosphere remains, notepads, answering machines, and other outdated technologies are disappearing for good—or at least, that is the ambition driving this renewal effort.

The pickle plant is currently undergoing a major overhaul: the flooring is being completely replaced, and the vinegar system is being extensively modernized. Despite this work, production continues unabated. We are also introducing some new team members. Frans, an experienced and exacting professional, is being joined by newcomer Daniël, who is beginning his training as a maintenance technician under the guidance of the expert and seasoned Richard.

Before the gherkin harvest begins in a few weeks, they are first preparing a stock of ginger tea. Oos likes order, even though his office suggests otherwise. And fortunately, there is something else on the agenda, too! The "Gherkin King" considers everyone's health a priority and is having the entire crew undergo a medical check-up. Meanwhile, the havoc wreaked by night frost on the German gherkin crop is giving him sleepless nights.

Production at the pickle factory has largely ground to a halt due to the renovation. Small rush orders are being handled by hand. Fresh-produce manager Daan, in particular, is bearing the brunt of the resulting headaches. Oos is deaf he knows that but he has finally reached the point of taking a hearing test. It is the final week before the pickles arrive, creating tension among some of the factory staff especially Frans, the resident grump and it shows.

There is always one person on the team who becomes insufferable as soon as gherkin season approaches, and that is Frans. At that point, nothing seems to be good enough something that certainly doesn't go unnoticed by anyone. The self proclaimed "Gherkin King" thought it wise to slip away for a week, but just like last time, Oos is on vacation when the first batch of gherkins arrives. This year, the honor and responsibility of officially opening the season fall to Silvian in true style, with a festive bottle of champagne.

Oos travels with his sons for a work visit to the largest pickle festival in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, Oos falls seriously ill. As if that weren't enough of a setback, their luggage fails to arrive, forcing the men to make their first order of business the purchase of new clothing and undergarments. While the "Pickle King" and his "princes" immerse themselves in the American pickle festivities, their staff back in Amsterdam ensure that the factory continues to operate.

Oos, Silvian, and Camiel are wide-eyed with wonder at the American pickle festival. Naturally, they do plenty of tasting, and Silvian even takes part in an actual pickle eating contest. Fortunately, there’s also time to relax: the guys head off to go camping and fishing. The ‘Dutch Pickle King’ and his sons receive an invitation to visit a pickle company in the city. Back in Amsterdam, things keep running smoothly though not without the inevitable ‘Daan-stress.’
